Our History

Sigma Phi Omega was founded in 1949 at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles by a group of 17 Japanese women in response to growing anti-Asian-American sentiment that followed as a result of World War II and Pearl Harbor. To protest against the prevalent anti-Asian-American stigma, they sought unity and decided to take the courageous step of creating a culturally welcoming space themselves.

Since 1949, Sigma Phi Omega has expanded across multiple chapters in California and Texas, consisting of women from diverse cultures and backgrounds. Today, we are the oldest continuing Asian-interest sorority in the nation, as well as the third oldest Asian American sorority ever founded.

Gamma Chapter is the third chapter of Sigma Phi Omega, founded in May 1, 1991. We are currently the largest and oldest Asian-interest sorority on the UT campus.
